The Resource: Video clip of 'Tribute to Tom Crean'
Description: This is a youtube clip about the life of Tom Crean. It gives the quotes, facts and pictures about Tom Crean. It is a good stimulus to get the children engaged and to get them thinking. it would be a good introduction to a lesson on Tom Crean. Via: www.youtube.com Teaching Ideas:
If I was to use this as a stimulus I think it would benefit the children because there are quotes from Tom Crean himself in the video, there are loads of pictures for the children to observe and to give them an idea of what Tom Crean went through and also show just about what he achieved. It would be important for the teacher to highlight things in the pictures and identify important facts to children. It may be necessary for the teacher to stop at certain points for a class discussion. it would be important for the teacher to circulate the room to make sure the children are writing down their thoughts. Curriculum Linkage: English: Note taking skills and report writing. As a follow on the children could read Tome Crean: Ice Man Geography: Exploring the Antarctic Drama: Conscience alleys, dramas about the lives of sailors |

The Resource: Powerpoint presentations on Tom Crean
Description: I designed two powerpoints on Tom Crean. These powerpoints gave facts about his life and looked at this explorations. There is a quiz at the end of each presentation for the children to participate in. Via: I got these powerpoints off seomraranga.ie but I altered them to suit my needs Teaching Ideas:
If I were to teach this to the children I would start off by giving the children straightforward facts about his life and achievements through the use of the powerpoints. I would allow time for talk on discussion on more controversial points and get the children to compare his early life to their lives. Curriculum Linkage: Geography: Map Tom Crean's journey on a map English: Write a diary entry on how they think he may have felt when leaving home Drama: Conscience alley on whether to stay on the farm or leave. |
