Teaching Ideas and Activities:
Children create their own river model in groups
Label their river model and write a sentence about each feature
Children are given a sheet with a river to label
If I was to do this with the children again I would make a model with the children and get them to copy after each step. This would lead to less confusion and better classroom management. I would also put the children into smaller groups. I felt the groups were too big and not everyone participated to their ability. I would also allow more time for the making of the model. This took the children a lot longer than I anticipated. I would also get the children to stick the labels onto the model rather than using the cocktail sticks as the cocktail sticks kept falling.
Curriculum Linkage:
This model formed part of my display for my TAP on water and was used to demonstrate to the children the features of a river.
History: Rivers as a main method of transportation before cars, trucks aeroplanes became common
Geography: River features. Rivers of Ireland. The uses of rivers
